what this substance called ‘play’ really is, and about all the complexity
it can claim.
Even if you see all the playful stuff busting out across the networks in
the age-of-CoVid as a joyous return to our original, some say childish
nature; it’s probable you’re conditioned to see only the visible froth from
the top of play — a display of surface effects. It’s a view that doesn’t
begin to explain the underlying processes which are totally integral, or
illustrate how important to our basic operating system play is. In short,
the universe of possibility this simple four-letter word has given us; and
will continue to give us. So this book is an attempt to show the deeper
layers — and build a new understanding of how play really powers humans.

Because it needs to cover a lot of ground, and it’s no easy job knowing
which direction to head, perhaps the first step is to show how play
can pop up in an entirely different context to funny memes and online
clowning. Somewhere like, let’s say, a laboratory at the University of
Nijmegen in the Netherlands.
